The Salesman is the second film by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi to win an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. A Separation was the first, and it, too, features a middle-class Iranian couple grappling with complex moral dilemmas. Simin files for divorce when her husband Nader is unwilling to leave his Alzheimer’s-stricken father behind and emigrate to the U.S. for their daughter’s sake. Further complications arise when a poor, religious woman hired to care for the father accuses Nader of causing her to miscarriage.
