In celebration of Coolidge Award recipient Viggo Mortensen, we continue our series of repertory screenings with his 2009 award winning film The Road.

Director John Hillcoat (The Proposition) adapts Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name; a bleak tale of a father (Mortensen) and son traversing an apocalyptic wasteland filled with dangers at every turn. Besides each other, the only thing that the father and son have to hold on to during their endless trek are the memories of their angelic mother (Charlize Theron). Fighting off sickness, hunger, bandits, and nomadic cannibal tribes, the duo stick as close to the road as possible, trying to find salvation along the coast; but will they make it alive?

The Road has a breathtaking beauty and brilliantly nuanced performances by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) that deserve to be revisited, and what better way than in the context of the Coolidge Award's repertory screening series.
