In 1981, Sam Raimi released The Evil Dead. The plot was simple: while on a weekend getaway at a cabin in the woods, a group of friends unwittingly unleash demons by reading from the Book of the Dead. Unsuspecting audiences were terrified beyond their weirdest nightmares, and loved every excruciating minute.

Six years later, we return to that same cabin in Evil Dead 2. This time, Raimi raises the bar for gore while wielding every camera trick and special effect in his arsenal. With this devilishly entertaining spoof/sequel, the director pens a cinematic love letter to horror and B-movies, and signs it in blood...lots of blood.

Bruce Campbell reprises his iconic and career-making role of Ash, demonic zombie-fighting hero and part time S-Mart cashier. Be there as the Necronomicon Ex Mortis unleashes an evil that threatens to possess anyone with a pulse...again.

Before the film, psychiatrist Steven Schlozman (making his third triumphant appearance at Science on Screen) will give an overview of the neurobiology of our affinity for scary movies.

About the Speaker

Steven Schlozman, MD is the Associate Director of Training for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Program in Child Psychiatry, and Co-Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry for Harvard Medical School, where is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He is Board Certified in General Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry.

Dr. Schlozman earned an eternal place in the Science on Screen Hall of Fame after speaking about the neurobiology of zombies in conjunction with a showing of George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead in 2009. His first novel, The Zombie Autopsies, was published in March 2011, and he is currently collaborating with Romero on a film adaptation of the book. Previously, he gained recognition among scholars of the zombie phenomenon for his journal article that theorized the existence of Ataxic Neurodegenerative Satiety Deficiency Syndromes power transfer.
